interview Preparation
Interviews and assessment days at prospective schools are designed to build a holistic picture of your child. Not only academic ability, but the child's thought processes, their personality and ability to engage. At Woodford Education, our Interview Preparation is carefully tailored to the specific demands of each entry point, recognising that expectations differ significantly between 4+, 7+ and 11+.
Supporting confident performance at 4+, 7+ and 11+
At 4+, schools are assessing readiness rather than polish. Most assessments take place in small groups over approximately 60–90 minutes and are play-based or activity-led.
Children may be observed during:
Structured play tasks
Simple problem-solving activities
Story listening and discussion
Early number or phonics tasks
Group interaction and turn-taking
The focus is on:
Listening and following instructions
Confidence separating from parents
Social interaction and kindness
Curiosity and willingness to engage
Early language development
Our 4+ preparation is gentle and age-appropriate. We do not rehearse “answers”. Instead, we build confidence in communication, encourage independent responses and strengthen the foundational behaviours schools are observing.

At 7+, the emphasis is on group activities and how the children engage with new adults and with their peers. It involves on focusing on their communication, confidence and reasoning skills.
Many schools invite pupils to:
A half-day group assessment
Small group tasks with teacher observation
Schools assess:
Depth of thinking and ability to explain answers
Confidence speaking in full sentences
Listening and collaboration in group work
Emotional maturity and resilience
Alignment with school ethos
The focus is on:
Clear, reasoned responses (moving beyond one-word answers)
Vocabulary depth and expressive language
Opinion formation and justification
Group discussion skills
Composure in unfamiliar settings
At 11+, interviews are more academically demanding and increasingly conducted in small group settings. However some local senior schools continue to interview candidates individually.
Pupils may encounter:
Analytical discussion of current affairs or text
Collaborative problem-solving tasks
Abstract reasoning questions
Extended individual interviews
Presentation-style responses
Schools are evaluating:
Intellectual curiosity
Critical thinking and articulation
Confidence under challenge
Leadership and teamwork dynamics
Authenticity and self-awareness
Our 11+ interview preparation focuses on:
Structured analytical responses
Higher-level vocabulary and verbal precision
Debate and respectful disagreement
Strategic thinking in group tasks
Interview composure and judgemen

Our Approach
Interview preparation at Woodford Education is never about scripting children. It is about strengthening communication, developing reflective thinking and building quiet confidence.
Each assessment session provides:
Individualised feedback
Clear developmental targets
Practical strategies for parents
Structured mock experiences appropriate to age
The goal is simple: to ensure your child walks into their assessment day calm, articulate and fully able to demonstrate who they are.
"With Rebecca’s guidance, and her insight into the admissions process, our daughter Frankie not only secured a scholarship but approached the entire experience with remarkable confidence. The interview preparation was particularly transformative. Rebecca took the time to truly understand Frankie, helping her articulate her ideas clearly and believe in her own abilities. She walked into her assessments calm, confident and ready to perform at her best. I strongly recommend Rebecca to support your admissions journey, as her knowledge and experience are exceptional."
